Żona znanego producenta filmowego Davida E. Kelly. Uczęszczała na studia dziennikarskie, była fotomodelką, odbyła studia aktorskie (1978). Początkowo pracowała w telewizji, na ekranie debiutowała w 1980 roku. Jedna z najpopularniejszych aktorek amerykańskich. Współpracuje z czołówką amerykańskich reżyserów.
Trzykrotnie nominowana do Oscara, pięciokrotnie do Złotego Globu. Gra zarówno role dramatyczne Frankie i Johnny (1991, reż. G. Marshall), jak i komediowe Czarownice z Eastwick (1986, reż. G. Miller). Występowała w filmach kostiumowych Wiek niewinności (1993, reż. M. Scorsese) i filmach science-fiction Powrót Batmana (1992, reż. T. Burton).
